Peer Paddling
Want to get on the water more but can't make the club's scheduled sessions? Ready to take on new rivers and challenges? We're excited to announce a new initiative to help our members do just that: peer paddling.
What Is Peer Paddling?
Peer paddling is an informal way for intermediate and advanced club members to connect and paddle together. Unlike our official club-led trips or coached sessions, there is no formal leader or coach. Instead, paddlers of a similar ability plan a trip and go together, with everyone taking responsibility for their own safety and decisions. Think of it as a way to find a paddling buddy or crew for an adventure, from a casual paddle on the canal to a more challenging river run.Key Considerations
We want to make sure everyone stays safe and has a great time. Here's what you need to know before you sign up for a peer paddle:
- You're in charge. There will be no formal coaching or leadership. You are responsible for your own safety, equipment, and choices on the water.
- Use your own kit. Club equipment is not available for use on peer paddles.
- Check your insurance. If a peer paddle is arranged outside of a formal club activity, it's not covered by the club's insurance. To ensure you have public liability insurance and a waterways license, we highly recommend you have your own Paddle UK On The Water membership.
- Assess the risk. Before you go, make sure you and your group are equipped for the route. Consider the conditions, know the route, and have a communication plan. Look out for your fellow paddlers, and don't be afraid to share any concerns you might have.
Summary
To make things easier, we'll be creating a new group in our WhatsApp community specifically for peer paddles. When you list a trip, just be sure to state that it's a peer paddle and mention any details the group should know.
We're excited to see what amazing adventures you'll plan together. Happy paddling!
